Angels of the Night: Deception

Book 3 in the Angels of the night series is officially in the works and it is going to be the biggest roller coaster ride so far! What has happened to me over the last year and a half you ask? Plain and simply, I lost my muse. I had no interest in writing at all and was even struggling to find books to read.

So what the heck is this elusive entity that needs to be present for any type of creative juices to flow? I googled it and came up with a few interesting thoughts:

Wikipedia:

The Muses (Ancient Greek: Μοῦσαι, moũsai:[1] perhaps from the o-grade of the Proto-Indo-European root *men- "think"[2]) in Greek mythology, poetry, and literature, are the goddesses of the inspiration of literature, science and the arts. They were considered the source of the knowledge, related orally for centuries in the ancient culture that was contained in poetic lyrics and myths.

Many artists, writers, poets and musicians have said that their creative work has been inspired by an individual whom they refer to as their muse. A muse is someone who has such an influence on another that he or she becomes the focus and inspiration for that person's creative work. The term has historically been used by men to describe the women that they have been in love with and made the subject of their work.

Here's my favourite - a quote from Stephen King:

“There is a muse, but he’s not going to come fluttering down into your writing room and scatter creative fairy-dust all over your typewriter or computer. He lives in the ground. He’s a basement kind of guy. You have to descend to his level, and once you get down there you have to furnish an apartment for him to live in. You have to do all the grunt labor, in other words, while the muse sits and smokes cigars and admires his bowling trophies and pretends to ignore you. Do you think it’s fair? I think it’s fair. He may not be much to look at, that muse-guy, and he may not be much of a conversationalist, but he’s got inspiration. It’s right that you should do all the work and burn all the mid-night oil, because the guy with the cigar and the little wings has got a bag of magic. There’s stuff in there that can change your life. Believe me, I know.”

At this point I'm not sure where my muse was or what brought it back, I'm just glad it's here and plan to take full advantage. Hopefully "the guy with the cigar" is here to stay for awhile.

Happy Thanksgiving

Hope you all have a relaxing Thanksgiving weekend!

Found the following poem online and wish I could take credit for it!

T’was the night of Thanksgiving,
But I just couldn’t sleep.
I tried counting backwards,
I tried counting sheep.
The leftovers beckoned,
The dark meat and white.
But I fought the temptation,
With all of my might.
Tossing and turning,
with anticipation.
The thought of a snack
became infatuation.
So I raced to the kitchen,
Flung open the door,
And gazed at the fridge,
Full of goodies galore.
I gobbled up turkey,
And buttered potatoes,
Pickles and carrots,
Beans and tomatoes.
I felt myself swelling,
So plump and so round.
‘til all of a sudden,
I rose off the ground.
I crashed through the ceiling,
Floating into the sky,
With a mouthful of pudding,
And a handful of pie.
But I managed to yell
As I soared past the trees
Happy eating to all,
Pass the cranberries, please!!
May your stuffing be tasty
May your turkey be plump.
May your potatoes and gravy
Have nary a lump.
May your yams be delicious,
May your pies take the prize
And May your Thanksgiving dinner
Stay off of your thighs!

Excerpt: Angels of the Night - Divinity

Here's an excerpt from one of my fav. parts of Angels of the Night: Divinity! I love the tension between Max and Darcy - wait until book 3! Enjoy and get your copy at:

I couldn't take my eyes off him as we moved to the rhythm of the
music. Here we were together again, finally. Despite all the obstacles, despite all the shit, we'd made it. His deep brown eyes scanned my face and it felt as though I could fall into them. I hadn't been this close to him for months and my heart hammered. Thomas was around somewhere but what could he do in front of all these people? I never wanted to leave, never wanted to be out of his arms.

We stayed like this for the next hour or more, despite the barrage of
dance songs that pounded the walls, until another slow song started. Darcy
was just wrapping his arm more tightly around my waist when Max appeared
beside us.

"Hey, Wallace," he yelled. "Glad you made it."

I was impressed that Max was trying to be friendly and couldn't help
the grin on the corners of my lips.

Darcy nodded stiffly but seemed to have a hard time looking Max in
the face. I could feel the muscles in his arm flexing and rubbed them with the palm of my hand hoping the motion would be relaxing. "Hey," he said stiffly.

Max nodded toward me but yelled at Darcy. "Can I dance with her?"

Darcy's eyes narrowed to slits and he glared down at Max. "What do
you think?"

Max adjusted his tie and smoothed the sides of hair. "I don't think
there's anything wrong with me dancing with her once." He glanced over at
me. "We've been friends since we were kids. Come on, Allison."

Why We Love Paranormal Books

Several years ago, paranormal romance books were few and far between. Check out any bookstore today and you'll notice that this subgenre is one of the most popular and I would guess that it is a good runner beside your general romance stories. Vampires, witches, ghosts, and demons are gaining in popularity and getting sexier with each new author debut. I can't get enough of this genre and am searching for that next great read! As a reader pointed out to me; "I never feel quite satisfied. . . it's like a drug. I don't know if I'll ever get sick of reading paranormal stories."

The idea that a creature of the night could be so different from us yet so appealing is one of the draws to the paranormal. Some authors have made the vampire so sexy that you would be hard pressed to find any resemblence to Bram Stoker's Dracula - a blood thirsty killing machine incapable of love. Ghosts and demons as well have been portrayed as attractive paranormal characters but why?

Perhaps what happens in the afterlife is a topic many people are seeking answers to. The thought that we might not have to leave Earth when we die could be the draw that brings readers back to the paranormal side time and time again. And don't forget about the the chance for eternal life and youth! How many people wouldn't want to live forever in an eternally youthful state?

As a writer, the paranormal genre gives me the opportunity to create different characters and plots with few hard rules. I kind of see it as a 'no holds barred' idea and it truly gives a writer free reign for creativity. My vampires in the Angels of the Night series don't follow many of the 'old' rules. Darcy and Thane - the twins - as well as the others we're introduced to - are able to go out in the sun for short periods of time and need human energy to survive in addition to blood to name just a few of the differences. The Twilight series received a lot of flak and critism for Meyer's idea of the 'vampire' but I thought the approach was fresh and much needed! Some said that Meyer's book brought the vampire to life again and in a lot of ways I agree!
